Abstract

This chapter is based on the design approach of Atelier 1, an architectural design studio at Gazi University Department of Architecture in Ankara. Atelier 1 aims to develop a critical understanding of design thinking, and promotes interdisciplinary approaches in the studio. The critical discourses in other disciplines indicate the developmental process of architectural concepts. As a critical design studio, Atelier 1 defined the main theme of fall and spring semesters of 2021 and 2022 as “Architecture as an Emancipating Ground.” Students discussed the concept of emancipation in architecture from an interdisciplinary perspective including philosophical conceptions, social and ecological dimensions, and developed their own critical approaches. Due to the emancipatory approach of Atelier 1, students were encouraged to propose their own architectural scenarios and programs. The chapter presents a selection of the emancipatory design projects, as well as a cross-section of the educational model of Atelier 1 that involves interdisciplinary approaches.
